Diesel prices in Africa have remained stable in March 2025, but stability does not mean relief for consumers. Many African countries still struggle with high diesel prices, affecting transportation, industry, and the cost of living.

Without a significant drop in prices, countries with expensive diesel continue to experience inflationary pressures. Businesses that rely on diesel for operations, such as manufacturing and shipping, pass higher costs to consumers. This situation further reduces the purchasing power of households and adds to economic challenges.

Why Are Diesel Prices High in Some African Countries?

Several factors contribute to high diesel prices in some African nations. These include:

  • Heavy reliance on fuel imports
  • Poor energy infrastructure
  • High taxes and import duties
  • Currency instability
  • Supply chain issues

Some countries, such as the Central African Republic, rely almost entirely on imported fuel. This increases costs due to transportation and logistics challenges. Others, like Zimbabwe, struggle with currency instability, making fuel imports even more expensive.

According to GlobalPetrolPrices, the global average price for diesel in March remains at $1.20 per litre. However, many African countries are well above this benchmark.

Below is a list of the African countries with the highest diesel prices in March 2025 from Prime Business Africa, based on data from GlobalPetrolPrices as of March 17.

The Central African Republic has the highest diesel price in Africa. At $2.247 per litre, it is also the third most expensive in the world. The country depends heavily on fuel imports, and transportation costs contribute to the high price.

2. Malawi – $1.576 per litre (39th globally)

Malawi ranks second in Africa, with diesel prices at $1.576 per litre. While slightly lower than in February, diesel costs remain high due to import reliance and supply chain disruptions.

3. Zimbabwe – $1.550 per litre (42nd globally)

Zimbabwe’s diesel price of $1.550 per litre is driven by economic instability and high import duties. The country’s currency challenges further complicate fuel pricing.

4. Seychelles – $1.472 per litre (46th globally)

Seychelles, an island nation, has one of the highest diesel prices in Africa due to its dependence on fuel imports. The cost of transporting fuel to the islands adds to the expense.

Diesel prices in Sierra Leone remain unchanged at $1.392 per litre. Import costs and local economic conditions continue to keep fuel prices high.

High diesel prices affect multiple sectors, including transportation, agriculture, and manufacturing. Many businesses rely on diesel to power machinery and transport goods. When fuel prices increase, operating costs rise, and these costs are often transferred to consumers.

For countries already struggling with inflation, high diesel prices worsen economic conditions. Citizens face higher costs for food, transportation, and essential goods. This puts pressure on household budgets and slows economic growth.

Will Diesel Prices Drop in Africa?

Experts suggest that diesel prices in Africa depend on global oil prices, government policies, and local economic conditions. Some countries may introduce subsidies or tax relief to ease the burden. However, as long as many African nations rely on fuel imports, diesel prices are likely to remain high.

For now, consumers and businesses must navigate the challenges of expensive fuel, hoping for long-term energy solutions that reduce dependence on costly imports.
