The objective of the upgrade is to restore the Abuja light rail’s functionality and alleviate transportation challenges faced by the city’s inhabitants.

Mr. Adesola emphasized the pivotal role that the metro system plays in easing mobility for residents and reducing traffic congestion. The rehabilitation of the rail system became necessary due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in temporary shutdowns and subsequently left the equipment vulnerable to vandalism.

To ensure the successful execution of the project, the Nigerian government has awarded contracts for the provision of security for the ARMT System. With stringent security measures in place, the authorities aim to safeguard this valuable asset from further acts of vandalism.

Mr. Adesola asserted that the government is resolute in restoring the Abuja Light Rail System to its former glory and surpassing its previous performance.

The rehabilitation project encompasses various aspects, including the repair and replacement of damaged equipment, upgrading of facilities, and implementing modern security measures.

The goal is to create a more efficient and reliable transportation system that will serve the city’s growing population effectively.

The Director of Transportation, Mr. Joseph Akinteye, provided insights into the project’s scope, consisting of Lots 1 A and 3, spanning approximately 45.245 kilometers. While the initial ARMT system was planned for 77.775 kilometers, only 45.245 kilometers were completed in 2017, followed by its commissioning in 2018 and a subsequent trial operation service lasting 20 months.

The successful rehabilitation is expected to bring back full-fledged Metro Line services for the convenience of Abuja’s commuters.

The upgrade of the Abuja Rail Mass Transit System goes beyond physical infrastructure repairs; it symbolizes the resilience and determination of the city and its people to overcome challenges.

It also highlights the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for economic growth and social well-being. The rejuvenated metro system will undoubtedly contribute to the city’s development and enhance the overall quality of life for its citizens.

With the contract awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation Ltd (CCECC), the Nigerian government looks forward to witnessing the restoration of the Abuja Light Rail System within the next 12 months.

The project signifies a significant step towards providing a more sustainable and efficient transportation solution for Abuja, setting an example for other cities in Nigeria to follow suit in upgrading their urban transportation infrastructure.
