AdminThe Forum of South-East Academic Doctors (FOSAD) has condemned the alleged assault of a Bolt driver, Mr Stephen Abuwatseya, by Mr Alex Mascot Ikwuechegh, a member of the House of Representatives (Aba North Federal Constituency), at his residence in Abuja.
A viral video showed the lawmaker slapping the e-hailing taxi driver in his house and threatening to deal with him. The lawmaker claimed that the Bolt driver disrespected him by asking him to come to his car and pick up a what he ordered.
Join our WhatsApp ChannelThe incident has generated reactions after the lawmaker refused to pay the Bolt driver and called the police to arrest him.
In a statement signed by FOSAD President Dr Stephen Nwala, and Dr Uzor Ngoladi, Secretary General, the Forum said the “unwarranted display of aggression” towards the Bolt driver is “deeply concerning and unacceptable.”
“As representatives of academia and advocates for a society grounded in the principles of justice, human dignity, and respect, we find this act reprehensible and unbecoming of a public servant.”
The Forum said it stands firmly against any form of abuse or intimidation by those in positions of authority against Nigerian citizens.

It said e-hailing drivers are hardworking people who are providing essential services to millions across the country and contributing to the economy.
“The brutalization of one of their own reflects a disregard for the dignity and rights of the common Nigerian worker, as well as an abuse of the power entrusted to public officials.”
FOSAD demanded that the lawmaker, Mr Ikwuechegh, must issue a public apology to the assaulted driver and the Nigerian public within the next seven days.
The group also called on relevant authorities to launch a thorough investigation into the incident, ensuring that justice is served, and that such incidents do not reoccur.
It also called on public officials to respect workers and citizens’ rights.
“We urge all public servants and officials to treat citizens with respect and to remember that their positions are meant to serve, not subjugate or intimidate.”
“The Forum of South-East Academic Doctors will continue to monitor this issue closely and stands ready to support any actions necessary to protect the rights of Nigerians against abuse by those in authority.
“We remain committed to advocating for justice, fairness, and the humane treatment of all citizens,” the group added.
