The race for the next coaching job of the Super Eagles of Nigeria has effectively begun with the formal letter of intent to replace embattled incumbent Gernot Rohr already submitted by Johannes Bonfrere according to former Eagles media officer Colin Udoh.
Rohr qualified the three time African champions for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations to be held in Cameroon in January 2022 and also led the team to the playoff stages of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
However criticisms has continued to trail his tactical decisions and non invitation to the team of players who deserve to be in the fold.
Former Super Eagles media officer Collin Udoh has revealed that 1996 Atlanta Olympics winning coach Johannes Bonfrere who has had two previous stints in charge of the team has applied for the job.
Udoh wrote on Twitter: “Nigeria’s 1996 Olympic gold-winning coach Jo Bonfrere has formally put in his paperwork to apply for the Nigeria job.
“The NFF is currently in the process of paying off current coach Gernot Rohr to terminate his contract while interviewing candidates for the job.”
The Dutchman’s first spell was between 1995 and 1996 while his second was between 1999 and 2001.
During his second stint, he led the team to a second place finish at the 2000 AFCON, after losing to Cameroon on penalties.
Bonfrere Jo a few days spoke about his intention to return to the team: “I can come on a rescue mission to resurrect the Super Eagles. I’m familiar with some of the current assistant coaches, Salisu Yusuf and Joseph Yobo.
“And I will be happy to have Daniel Amokachi or Emmanuel Amuneke to be part of my technical crew.”
