Two days after Ghana were defeated by African champions Algeria in a friendly ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, former Ghana FA President Kwesi Nyantakyi believes Nigeria is not among the likely winners of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon and has tipped the quartet of Mali, Senegal, Morocco and Algeria for glory when the final of the tournament is played on February 6.
Speaking to Ghana’s local television channel, Ouna TV, the football administrator specially hailed Mali’s emergence as a force in African football.
“Mali has invested massively in the development of players at the grassroots level. GMG Academy for instance has been doing great work at this.
“This has positioned Mali as one of the favourites for the tournament. Senegal, Morocco, and Algeria are the countries who can excel at the tournament,” Nyantakyi who spent 13 years at the helm of the GFA stated.
Ghana has not won the AFCON title since the 1982 edition in Libya which extends the West Africans’ trophilessness at the AFCON to 40 years.
The Black Stars suffered a 3-0 humiliating loss to Algeria on Wednesday in the final preparatory game for the tournament.
Adam Ounas and Islam Slimani goals plus a Jonathan Mensah’s own goal secured a win for the Fennecs.
With the win, the North African giants retained their last 34 matches, having secured an incredible 26 victories and eight draws.
