FIFA U-17 Women W/Cup: Flamingos Zoom Into Knockout, Demolish Ecuador 4-0

Nigeria’s female U-17 side, The Flamingos, continued their cruise at the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women World Cup in Dominican Republic with another emphatic victory over Ecuador.

The Flamingos had flagged off their campaign in the tournament with 4-1 dispatch of New Zealand last Wednesday.

Prior to the match between Nigeria and Ecuador, the ever bubbling Flamingos were seen dancing to some sweet tunes as part of their ginger. The dancing steps and synchrony that followed forced the Ecuadorian ladies to join the party as both teams enjoyed a convivial atmosphere that brings out the best of sportsmanship.

The Flamingos did not however lose sight of the need to go for the kill as they sent their opponents to the cleaners in the match played at the Estadio Cibao (Santiago De Los Caballeros).

The Nigerian teenagers began the goal harvest in the 18th minute when Shakirat Moshood converted a penalty. As if underscoring the team’s harmonious blend on the pitch, Harmony Chidi increased the tally in the 54th minute, Peace Effiong added a third goal in the 66th minute before opening goal scorer Shakirat Moshood provided the icing on the cake in the 6th minute of added time.

Shikirat has now scored three goals in the tournament and also had a yellow card in the kitty.

The Olowokere girls will next face hosts Dominican Republic on Wednesday. Nigeria is on top Group A with six points in two matches followed by Ecuador with three points, hosts Dominican Republic and New Zealand who have already crashed out have a point each.

Defending Champions Spain also lead Group B with six points followed by USA with three points Columbia and Korea Republic have a point each.

Group C is still open with Korea DPR and England having three points each while Kenya and Mexico who lost their opening matches have no points a the moment.

Korea DPR take on Kenya this Sunday, while England and Mexico, will slug it out.

In Group , Brazil hold the ace with three points with Japan and Poland with a point each. Brazil will take on Brazil today while Zambia and Poland will trade tackles on Monday.

Primebusiness.africa recalls  that The Flamingos have been to every edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, with the exception of 2018 edition. They have reached the quarterfinals thrice 2010, 2012 and 2014.

The team however finished in the third place at the 2022 edition in India after beating Germany on penalty. The game had ended 3-3 at regulation time forcing penalty shootout which Nigeria won 3-2.
