The Federal Government(FG) has taken a step towards reforming Nigeria’s Police Force (NPF) by declaring the 7th of April as National Police Day.
Since assuming office last year, President Tinubu’s administration has embarked on comprehensive reforms aimed at changing the police force.

He believes that this transformation is crucial for the NPF to meet the challenges of modern policing effectively.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Tinubu at the event, highlighted the administration’s dedication to training and capacity-building for police officers. He stressed the need to equip them with the necessary expertise to handle the complex tasks of modern law enforcement.
In his address titled “Courage Under Fire: A Bouquet for Our Police Force,” VP Shettima acknowledged the exemplary valour of the police force, which he said symbolizes the highest level of patriotism. President Tinubu added that the commitment and resilience of the police instil confidence in brighter days ahead for Nigeria.

President Tinubu’s vision for the NPF goes beyond superficial changes like repainting buildings or procuring firearms. He emphasized that true reform requires a fundamental shift in the institutional mentality and memory. The administration has already begun investing in training, capacity-building, and upgrading equipment and technology to enhance the force’s operational effectiveness.
The President also announced the adoption of the first week of April as Police Week, with the 7th of April designated as National Police Day. This initiative aims to honour the hard work and sacrifices of police officers and to humanize them, recognizing them not just as shields of the nation but as individuals with families and emotions.
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, praised the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, for acknowledging the dedication and patriotism of the police force. He commended the decision to celebrate the nation’s unsung heroes and called for weeding out the bad elements within the force.
IGP Egbetokun expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his unwavering support and assured the award recipients that their contributions to the force would be remembered for years to come. Solomon Arase, Chairman of the Police Service Commission and former IGP, advocated for an improved welfare package for police personnel to enhance their performance.
