The 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has asked the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and security agencies to answer nagging questions about the explosion that rocked Ibadan late Tuesday evening. Sowore emphasized the need for a comprehensive investigation into the incident and posed critical questions regarding the alleged involvement of illegal miners.
In a series of tweets shared on his X handle (formerly Twitter), Sowore expressed skepticism about the swift conclusion reached by Governor Makinde, who attributed the explosion to illegal miners.

The politician questioned the identity of these miners, the nature of their activities, and the reasons behind their possession of powerful explosives.

Sowore’s tweets, titled “Posers For The Governor Of Oyo State #seyimakinde And Security Agencies Regarding The Deadly #IbadanBlast Last Night,” underscored the urgency of a thorough investigation.
He remarked, “Even in developed countries, it takes nothing less than 48 hours before government agencies make a categorical statement about such a massive explosion.”
These are some of the questions raised by Sowore:
Identity of Illegal Miners
Sowore demanded clarity on who the alleged illegal miners are, the nature of their mining activities, and why they possessed such potent explosives. He called for immediate disclosure of the miner’s identity.
Nature of Mining Activities
Sowore sought information on the type of minerals being mined by the individuals in question. He listed possibilities such as gold, silver, cobalt, or uranium and urged authorities to release a statement revealing the specifics.
Procedures for Explosives
Sowore raised concerns about the procedures for mining and using explosives, emphasizing that such incidents usually involve triggers. He questioned whether the building was rigged with explosives and, if so, the reasons behind it.
Awareness of Mining in Residential Areas
Sowore questioned whether Governor Makinde and the Oyo State government were aware of mining activities in the Agodi residential area. He sought clarification on whether the state was involved in rock blasting in a residential zone.
DSS Position
The politician brought attention to the role of the Department of State Services (DSS) in approving the use of explosives nationwide. He called for a public statement from the DSS on the matter to provide citizens with a preliminary report.
The explosion, which occurred on Dejo Oyelese Street in the Bodija area of Ibadan, led to panic among residents. The National Emergency Management Agency reported that over 20 houses were affected, with ongoing search and rescue operations
