The hospital said in a statement that his health deteriorated after he experienced sudden loss of consciousness. He was being treated for age-related medical condition.

According to the hospital, he was declared dead at 9:51 PM after all efforts to revive him failed.

Singh served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, becoming one of India’s longest-serving prime ministers. The economist-turned-politician was also said to be the architect of India’s economic liberalisation in the 1990s.  He was also credited with spearheading landmark nuclear deal with the United States.

Prior to becoming prime minister, Singh served as governor of the Central Bank of India and also Finance Minister.

He was succeeded by incumbent Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.

Reacting to news of his death, Modi in a social media post, described Singh as one of India’s “most distinguished leaders,” adding that the late ex-prime minister  rose from a humble background to become a respected economist.

He added that Singh left “a strong imprint” on the country’s economic policy over the years.

“His interventions in Parliament were also insightful. As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives,” Modi stated on X.

Modi added that Singh’s wisdom and humility were always visible during their extensive deliberations on various issues about governance.
