Elon Musk and other top billionaires have lost a combined $138 billion as tech stocks fall due to rising competition in artificial intelligence. The downturn follows a strong start to the year when the world’s wealthiest individuals were gaining an estimated $10 billion daily.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Musk’s net worth has dropped from $433 billion to $349 billion in just a month. Other tech leaders, including Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and Larry Ellison, have also seen significant losses. The shift in fortunes comes as the market reacts to the rapid rise of a new AI company, DeepSeek, which has challenged major players in the industry.

Tech Billionaires See Wealth Decline
The sudden drop in wealth has affected some of the biggest names in the tech world. Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, saw his net worth fall from $243 billion to $232 billion. Oracle’s chairman, Larry Ellison, lost nearly $9 billion, pushing him from the third to the fifth-richest person globally.
Meanwhile, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang suffered one of the biggest individual losses. His personal fortune dropped by over $20 billion, bringing his total net worth down to $103 billion. Nvidia’s market value also plunged by $600 billion as investors reacted to the rise of DeepSeek, a Chinese AI company making waves with its latest innovation, the R1 model.
The market shift has also hit other billionaires, including Dell Technologies founder Michael Dell, who lost $12.4 billion, and Google co-founder Larry Page, who saw a $6.3 billion decline. Google investor Andreas von Bechtolsheim also suffered a $5.4 billion loss.
DeepSeek’s AI Technology Disrupts the Industry
The biggest factor behind the recent market turbulence is the rise of DeepSeek. The Chinese AI company has introduced the R1 model, a low-cost, high-performance AI system that has intensified competition in the tech space.
DeepSeek’s advancements have shaken major companies like Nvidia, which previously dominated the AI chip market. Investors are now uncertain about the long-term dominance of existing tech giants, leading to stock declines for companies such as Meta, Oracle, and Google.
Industry analysts believe DeepSeek’s breakthrough could reshape the AI landscape, forcing companies to adapt to a rapidly changing market. “DeepSeek’s technology is world-class, and its open-source AI model has ignited global enthusiasm,” said Nvidia’s CEO, Huang, during a recent earnings call.
Elon Musk Remains the Richest Person in the World
Despite the massive losses, Musk remains the wealthiest individual on the planet. His $84 billion drop in net worth still leaves him with $349 billion, far ahead of his closest competitors.
Musk, who leads companies like Tesla, SpaceX, and Starlink, has faced market volatility before. While the recent losses are significant, his businesses continue to expand in various sectors, including AI, space exploration, and satellite internet services.
Other billionaires affected by the downturn are also expected to recover. Zuckerberg’s Meta remains a dominant force in social media and virtual reality, while Ellison’s Oracle continues to be a key player in cloud computing.
What’s Next for Tech Billionaires?
The sudden drop in wealth among the world’s richest tech figures raises questions about the future of the industry. Some investors worry that the rise of new AI competitors like DeepSeek could permanently shift market dynamics. Others believe this is just a temporary correction and that tech billionaires will bounce back.
For now, the AI revolution continues to reshape the industry. As new companies emerge and competition increases, tech leaders like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg will need to adapt to maintain their dominance.
