The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has debunked the widely held belief that the trending photograph of popular socialite, Obinna Iyiegbu better known as ‘Obi Cubana’ who was recently quizzed by the Commission over fraud and tax evasion purposes was on the premises of EFCC.
The EFCC stated this in a statement on Friday titled, ‘Obi Cubana Did not Take Photo with EFCC Staff’ which was signed by its Spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren.
Obi Cubana some months ago invited hordes of sympathisers who gathered in his hometown of Oba, Anambra state for the burial of his late mother where tons of naira notes were sprayed and littered.
The lavish burial rites drew widespread attention from observers across the country.
EFCC in a release made available to Prime Business Africa on Friday has sent out a disclaimer to that effect.
“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, wishes to disclaim a trending photograph in the social media purported to have been taken by socialite Obi Cubana in the premises of the Commission, crowded by people described as staff of the EFCC,” the Commission stated.
“The said picture captioned: EFCC Crew poses for quick photograph with billionaire socialite and businessman, Obi Cubana, was not taken in EFCC facility and the people therein are unknown to the Commission.
The Commission therefore warned the public not to be misled by another mischievous stunt by Cubana’s publicists.
The 46 year-old business tycoon has investments in the Hospitality and Construction industries.
Cubana was on Thursday evening left off the hook by the EFCC after being in their custody for three days.
The alleged photograph was taken last month at the book launch of Colonel Chukwu Obasi at the Nigerian Army Resource Center Asokoro, Abuja.
