The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday told the Federal High Court, Abuja, that Ibrahim Mohammed, the lawyer who filed an eight-count criminal charge against former Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah, acted on his own.

The EFCC said that it did not mandate Mohammed, a Superintendent of Police, to file any criminal charge against Oduah or prosecute her in any criminal matter.

Counsel for the EFCC, Helen Okonofun, told Justice Omotoso of the court that following his order the agency had carried out investigation on Mohammed.

Helen said the findings would be filed at the court registry and be made available to the court thereafter.

Washing the agency’s hands off, the counsel said Mohammed was initially with EFCC but was redeployed from the agency to the Police Headquarters on November 4, 2022 and since had nothing to do with the EFCC.

In his ruling, Justice Omotoso fixed October 4, 2023, for the EFCC to formally make the report of the findings available to the court.

On Tuesday, July 11, Justice Omotoso, who observed some flaws in charges brought by Mohammed, had handed the police lawyer over to EFCC for investigation on account of filing frivolous criminal charges against the former minister in the name of EFCC.

He then queried the lawyer on whether he had the mandate of the anti-graft agency to file the charges.

Mohammed gave an incoherently negative answer and admitted errors in using the name of the EFCC to file the charges.
