The Edo 2024 gubernatorial election has begun with assurances from the Edo State Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that the process will be transparent.
Anugbum Onuoha, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Edo State, stated that election results will be transmitted electronically, addressing concerns about transparency.

Results will be uploaded to IReV, provided there are no network issues.” He added that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) will be used to accredit voters, ensuring the accuracy of voter numbers at each polling unit.

Security in Place for Smooth Election
The Edo election has been greeted with a heavy security presence across the state to ensure a peaceful process. Despite movement restrictions, some traders in the New Benin market defied the order, continuing business activities.
Onuoha emphasised INEC’s commitment to conducting a credible election, saying, “We will conduct an election we can truly call our own.”
Key Candidates for the Edo Election
The gubernatorial race features 17 candidates, including 16 male candidates and one female.
The leading contenders are Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP), and Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The election marks the end of Governor Godwin Obaseki’s eight-year tenure.
As the election progresses, INEC remains confident that the electronic transmission system and BVAS accreditation will ensure a credible outcome.
