The suspects, identified as Edwin Obanor and Audu Tajudeen, were arrested with firearms in their possession. This development comes just hours before voters in Edo State head to the polls to decide the outcome of the governorship election.

Weapons Recovered in Edo Election Raid

The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the arrests in a statement released on Saturday.

According to Adejobi, the two suspects were caught in possession of illegal firearms, which they allegedly intended to use to disrupt the Edo Election.

Adejobi explained, “The Nigeria Police Force has made a significant breakthrough in its efforts to curb electoral violence in Edo State with the arrest of two political thugs. They were apprehended in separate locations, with one found carrying three cut-to-size locally fabricated pistols, and the other with a locally made gun.”

He further revealed that the police acted on a tip-off about planned electoral violence. “Acting on a tip-off, our officers quickly responded and apprehended Obanor, a known leader of an armed group, at Oredo Ward 4. Tajudeen was arrested at Igara Akoko in Edo State just hours before the election,” Adejobi said.

Security Forces Remain on High Alert

Adejobi emphasised the importance of these arrests in ensuring a peaceful Edo Election. “These arrests are a testament to the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to maintaining law and order during the Edo Election. We want to ensure that voters can head to the polls without fear of intimidation or violence,” he stated.

We will not tolerate violence or intimidation of any kind. Our goal is to ensure that the Edo Election is conducted peacefully and without incident.”

Adejobi also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity during the election period. “We reassure citizens of our dedication to protecting lives and property. Please report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or use our helplines. The safety of everyone is our top priority during the Edo Election,” he added.

Suspects in Custody

The two suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to face the full weight of the law. According to the police, they will be charged with illegal possession of firearms and conspiracy to cause electoral violence.

The Edo Election has garnered significant attention due to fears of violence, with political parties urging security forces to ensure the protection of voters. This pre-election raid is a positive step toward ensuring that the Edo Election will be conducted peacefully.

One voter, identified as Mr. Samson Obaseki, expressed relief at the arrests. “I’m happy the police are taking this seriously. We want to vote in peace without fearing for our lives,” he said.

As the Edo Election approaches, all eyes will be on the state to see whether security forces can deliver their promise of a peaceful and orderly election. With thugs already behind bars and weapons confiscated, voters can have more confidence in heading to the polls on Saturday.

This proactive move by the Nigeria Police Force serves as a reminder that the security of the Edo Election remains a top priority. Citizens are encouraged to stay vigilant and report suspicious behavior to authorities, ensuring a safe and transparent election.
