As the trial of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) resumes today, officers of the Department of State Services (DSS) have mounted heavy security checks on all adjoining roads leading to the Federal High Court, Abuja.
In a chat with Prime Business Africa, Chief Goddy Uwazurike, a lawyer and President of the Cultural Credibility Development Initiative (CCDI), who is representing Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide in the trial, said lawyers are thoroughly screened before being allowed to enter the court.
“I am at the road leading to the Federal High Court, Abuja for the trial of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. There is tight security around the roads leading to the court. DSS mounted security checks all over the adjourning roads. To be allowed to enter the court, lawyers are screened thoroughly. A lawyer enters if and only if he is cleared. I am still waiting for clearance to be allowed to enter the court premises. I have been doing so for the past one hour,” Chief Uwazurike stated.
Join our WhatsApp ChannelKanu arrived the court at 7am amidst tight security. The trial judge, Justice Binta Nyako had at the last sitting in November which was held without Kanu’s appearance, fixed today January 18 for the trial which is expected to last till January 20, 2022.

In another development, Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, lead counsel to the IPOB leader, has unveiled Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN) as the leader of the defence counsel for Nnamdi Kanu.
Ozekhome who appeared in court with the legal team, confirmed it saying, “Yes, I’m now in the legal team and that’s why you’re seeing me in court.”
Kanu is facing charges bordering on alleged terrorism and treasonable felony, in a trial that started in July last year after he was brought home from Kenya by the security forces.
