The moment Chima Udoye was announced as the winner of Nigerian Idol Season 9, he came close to tears. It was not tears of pain or disappointment but tears of joy.

His followers and fans rejoiced with him, noting that he has indeed worked hard enough to deserve his victory and the largesse that comes with it.

But perhaps not many knew that getting to that level had its ups and downs and most importantly that he failed to qualify in the previous season. In fact, in 2020, he started working as a background vocalist where he developed a passion on how to express himself and being heard all over the world.

In 2023, he auditioned for Nigerian Idol Season 8 but failed to scale through to the top 10 stage of the competition.

No doubt, the disappointment of not meeting the cut off mark after all the efforts cannot be ignored. For some it is enough to give up and indeed, he almost did.

The desire to get up and try again reduced, but in 2024, he was reportedly motivated by one of his friends to be part of this year’s edition and with his crowning on Sunday, the rest they say is now history.

Based on his first performance during the season 9 audition he got the platinum ticket, which took him through the last stage of the audition and he was the only platinum ticket holder out of three who got to the top 10 stage of the competition, where he eventually won.

While more facts continue to emerge about the latest king in town, the lesson to be learnt here is that falling does not mean finished.

If he had given up, after failing make it in Season 8, he wouldn’t have been in Season 9, let alone emerge champion.  No doubt his message for up and coming artists would be: “Don’t give up.”
