Nigeria’s first degree awarding private university, Caleb University, Imota, Lagos State has conferred honorary Doctoral Degree on two distinguished Nigerians: Dr John Momoh, Founder/Chairman, Channels Television; Mr Dele Alake, former Lagos State Information and Strategy Commissioner.
The conferment took place during the university’s 12th Convocation held from 19th to 21st January, 2023 at its Imota Campus Multipurpose Hall.
Join our WhatsApp ChannelAccording to the University’s Information, Media and Publication Specialist, Mr Olawale Adekoya, the three-day ceremony which has been restructured to hold during the Founder’s Week witnessed the conferment of Undergraduate and Postgraduate Degrees; Diplomas and Honorary Degrees.
In his speech, the university Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nosa-Owens Ibie, urged the current Undergraduate Students to make use of their time in the school, and should not be worried because the school has deposited in them all they would need to face the reality of life head on.
The VC, who is a Professor of Mass Communication also urged the Graduands to practise all they have learnt.
He said, “your time here is just like that of the incubation period whereas by the end of your stay, the seed would have germinated.
The Pro-Chancellor, Prof Sunday Ajayi, who extolled the virtues of the Visitor and Founder, Dr Oladega Adebogun, for his vision in establishing a world class institution like Caleb University, also praised the Graduands for raising the bar, adding that they should imbibe the core values of Caleb University; godliness, Innovation, Service, Integrity, Teamwork, Excellence and Creativity, for all their future endeavours. He admonished the graduating students “to always cite Philippians 4: 8-9, and commit it to heart.”
Relying on Caleb University Law 2007, Section 4, subsection (1) (f), which grants the University powers to grant Honorary Degree and other academic titles, the Registrar, Mr Mayokun Olumeru, constituted the Assembly as a Congregation.

Theme of the convocation lecture was ‘Digital Disruptions, Financial Inclusion, StartUps and the Challenge of Youth Creativity’. The Convocation Lecturer, Mr. Babatunde Fajemirokun, the Managing Director and CEO, AIICO Insurance Plc, counselled the youths to have an entrepreneurial mindset and acquire skills in order to constantly be ahead of competition in a vastly competitive world.
“Technology has changed a lot, as Flutterwavers and others are using technology to provide digital solution. My hope is that Caleb Graduates would also foster this growth in the nearest future,” Fajemirokun stated.
The breakdown of Class For Undergraduate Degrees revealed that a total of 747 students graduated; where 32 Students bagged the prestigious First Class cadre. Others are 390 (Second Class (Upper); 313 Second Class (Lower); 13 (Third Class).
Out of the 219 students conferred with Post Graduate Degrees, 32 made Distinction, while 187 made a Pass.
In a keenly contested race, Miss Eunice Moyinoluwa Osho emerged the Most Outstanding Undergraduate Student; while Mr Olaniran Timothy Oyelowo took the Most Outstanding Postgraduate Student award.
