In a bold and significant gesture against racism, the Brazilian national football team discarded their traditional yellow and green shirts and donned an all-black strip during a friendly international match against Guinea.

The decision to make this powerful move was prompted by the relentless racist attacks targeting Real Madrid striker Vinicius Junior throughout the season. The match, held at Espanyol’s stadium in Barcelona, witnessed Vinicius, along with his Real Madrid teammate Rodrygo, leading Brazil forward line.

The Brazilian Football Confederation stood firmly behind this initiative, accompanied by the slogan “Com racismo não tem jogo” (With racism, there is no game). The symbolic act aimed to draw attention to the persistent issue of racism in football and society at large.

The decision to wear black jerseys was driven by the alarming racial abuse suffered by Vinicius Junior, a rising star in Brazilian and international football.

Throughout the season, the talented Real Madrid forward became a target of racist attacks, igniting global outrage and prompting a call for action against discrimination within the sport.

The match took place at Espanyol’s stadium in Barcelona, which boasts a capacity of 40,000 spectators. It was a fitting venue for the occasion, as Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo, both representing Real Madrid, led Brazil’s attacking line.

The presence of these talented young players further emphasized the significance of combating racism and fostering inclusivity within football.

Prior to the match, the Spanish and Brazilian football federations jointly unveiled a plan for a friendly match scheduled to take place at the Santiago Bernabeu in March 2024.

This event aims to combat racism by promoting unity and equality on and off the field. The global outcry following the abuse faced by Vinicius Junior played a crucial role in galvanizing these organizations to take concrete action against racism in football.
