Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, has been handed a six-months jail term with no option of fine. This ruling comes after her recent arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on charges related to the abuse of the naira.

Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Lagos delivered the verdict on Friday, April 12, 2024, following an investigation that revealed Bobrisky’s alleged involvement in spraying naira notes at various events, which prompted her arrest.

The EFCC had initiated an investigation into Bobrisky’s actions, accusing her of currency abuse. It was revealed that she had engaged in similar activities at multiple occasions across different event centres and parties.

Upon her summons by the EFCC, Bobrisky voluntarily appeared for interrogation on Wednesday, April 4, 2024, at the Lagos Zonal Command. Subsequently, the EFCC added two counts of money laundering charges to its case against her, which were later dismissed by the court.

The verdict has stirred reactions from Nigerians, with some expressing disbelief at the severity of the punishment for what they perceive as a common occurrence at social events. Critics argue that Bobrisky was unfairly singled out and used as a scapegoat, questioning why no option of fine was provided.

Others, however, support the ruling, suggesting that it serves as a deterrent against similar acts in the future and underscores the importance of respecting national currency laws. They hope that Bobrisky will learn from the experience and refrain from flaunting disregard for the law on social media upon her release.
