Bobrisky’s recent encounter with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has brought to light the legal implications of abusing Nigerian currency, sparking discussions about the potential outcome should the case proceed to court.

The socialite, known for his flamboyant lifestyle, was arrested by the EFCC following allegations of spraying new naira notes at the premiere of “Beast of Two Worlds” in Lagos. This act, according to the anti-graft agency, violates Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, which prohibits tampering with currency issued by the Bank.

Section 21 of the Act clearly outlines the consequences of such actions, stating that individuals found guilty could face imprisonment for a minimum of six months or a fine not less than ₦50,000, or both. Moreover, subsection (3) of the same section specifies that any form of dancing, matching, or spraying of currency during social occasions constitutes an abuse and defacement of the currency, warranting punishment under the law.

This isn’t the first time such a case has come to public attention. In February 2023, Nollywood actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin faced similar charges for stepping on and spraying new naira notes at a social event in Lagos.
