Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia on Friday, announced its recognition of the State of Palestine, joining the ranks of countries such as Norway, Spain, and Ireland.

This decision comes in light of the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in the enclave that has dominated international discourse since October 7, 2023.

In an official statement, the Armenian Foreign Ministry emphasised the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the Palestinian issue, highlighting their longstanding support for the “two-state” solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. “At various international platforms, we have always advocated a peaceful and comprehensive settlement of the Palestinian issue and support the ‘two-state’ principle of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict solution. We are convinced that this is the only way to ensure that Palestinians and Israelis can realise their legitimate aspirations,” the statement read.

“Based on the above and reaffirming its commitment to international law and the principles of equality, sovereignty, and peaceful coexistence of peoples, the Republic of Armenia recognises the State of Palestine,” the statement added.

In response to this recognition, Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Armenian Ambassador to Israel, Arman Akopian, for a “stern reprimand.” Israel had previously indicated that it would limit its relationships with countries making similar decisions.

This development occurs against the backdrop of a fierce and ongoing conflict in Gaza. The hostilities were reignited on October 7 when Hamas launched a large-scale attack on Israel. The ensuing conflict has resulted in significant casualties and widespread destruction in Gaza, prompting calls for a cease-fire from the United Nations and other international organisations. Despite these calls, the death toll continues to rise, with no resolution in sight.
