Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, Edo State, has officially declared the immediate and indefinite suspension of all academic operations.
This decision, communicated through a statement by Otunba Mike Aladenika, the institution’s Head of Corporate Affairs, has sent shockwaves through the university community.
Join our WhatsApp ChannelThe suspension announcement was made public via a memo signed by Mr. Ambrose Odiase, the Acting Registrar of the university. The institution has been grappling with a series of protests by its students for approximately three days.
These demonstrations were in response to what the students perceived as tuition fee hikes for returning students. The protests led to the disruption of academic proceedings, creating a tense atmosphere on campus.
In response to the escalating protests, the university administration decided to disband the Students Union Government, a move that students had vehemently opposed. Despite repeated denials by the university regarding any tuition fee increases for returning students, the unrest continued to escalate.

Explaining the rationale behind the suspension of academic activities, Aladenika stated, “The suspension of academic activities became necessary following an emergency meeting of the university’s Senate in Ekpoma on Monday to appraise the continued protest by students running into days.
To prevent a total breakdown of law and order as well as the need to guarantee the safety of lives and property in the university community and its environs, Senate was left with no other choice than to direct an immediate suspension of academic activities.”
As a result of this suspension, all students residing in the university’s hostels are required to vacate their halls of residence within the next 24 hours. It is a clear indication that no student should be present in or around the halls of residence of the University by 3.00 p.m. on Tuesday.
Furthermore, Aladenika confirmed that the 40th Matriculation Ceremony, originally scheduled for Tuesday, has been postponed indefinitely, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the future of academic activities at Ambrose Alli University.
