African Leaders Launch School Of Governance, Appoint Moghalu As Inaugural President

African leaders have launched the African School of Governance (ASG) and appointed former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Professor Kingsley Moghalu, as the inaugural President.

The school was established to offer world-class education in governance and public policy, and also identifying opportunities to create home-grown solutions to Africa’s challenges.

According to a statement released at the weekend, signed by JohnPaul Sesonga, of the African School of Governance Foundation, Makhtar Diop, the Managing Director of the International Finance Corporation and former Senegalese Minister of Finance and Economy, was appointed chairman of the governing board of the institution.

Other members of the institution’s governing board include; Donald Kaberuka, former president of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Professor Hajer Gueldich, former Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore, and Francis Gatare, the Chief Executive Officer of the Rwanda Development Board.

Highlighting the vision of ASG, the statement said: “The collective vision of ASG’s leadership is to create an Institution that offers world-class education in governance and public policy while promoting home-grown solutions to Africa’s unique challenges and opportunities.”

The ASG initiative was founded in Kigali the capital of Rwanda by President Paul Kagame, and former Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Hailemariam Desalegn, in partnership with the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore and supported by the Master Card Foundation.

The statement emphasized that the ASG initiative focuses on addressing Africa’s development and governance challenges by building leadership capacity needed. It targets to achieve that through specific advanced degrees such as Master of Public Administration, Executive Master of Public Administration, and other specialized executive courses.

The School equally focuses on innovative research and Policy engagement. “The ASG will play a critical role in advancing governance through its dedicated research centres. This includes the Centre for Home-Grown Innovations in Policy and Governance, the Centre for African History and Leadership, the Centre for Trade and Regional Integration and the Centre for Technology and Effective Delivery,” Sesonga stated.

On his part, Moghalu expressed gratitude for the appointment. “The establishment of ASG is a powerful expression of a clear vision on the part of the founding leaders.

“I share this vision of a transformed Africa driven by competent leadership and governance, and I am honoured to have been tasked with leading ASG’s critical contribution to making that vision a reality.”
