President Muhammadu Buhari has charged the Super Eagles to maintain their winning streak at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon after their 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday night.

The win means that the Eagles who are gunning for a fourth title at the tournament finished their Group D campaign with a 100% record having defeated Egypt and Sudan in previous matches.

Speaking through his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina in a press release, President Buhari expressed optimism that the team have the potential of emerging champions of Africa when the final is played on February 6.

“President Muhammadu Buhari commends the Super Eagles of Nigeria for keeping hope alive in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon by winning all their group matches and advancing to the second round of the tournament in grand style,” the release stated.

“The President urges the Austin Eguavoen-led team to maintain and even surpass the terrific form that made them leaders in the group stage, as Nigeria hopefully looks forward to a total of seven emphatic wins in this competition.

“President Buhari trusts that the positive reputation of good sportsmanship the traveling fans, sportswriters and the football team have demonstrated in Cameroon will continue to enliven the importance of sports, particularly football, as an enabler of development, peace, tolerance, friendship and cooperation,” the release stressed.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles are the only team to have qualified for the Round of 16 with unblemish record thereby equalling Austin Eguavoen’feat of 2006 when he led the Eagles to a third place finish at that year’s AFCON also finishing the group stages with a perfect finish.
