Abdulkarim Chukkol Named Acting Chairman of EFCC, As DSS Quizzes Bawa

Abdulkarim Chukkol, Director of Operations, at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has been directed to take over as chairman of the Commission in acting capacity.

This followed the indefinite suspension of the Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa on Wednesday over alleged abuse of office.

A statement signed by Willie Bassey, Director of Information, office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, released on Wednesday night, said the suspension is to allow for a proper investigation into his conduct while in office.

Prior to the appointment, Chukkol was the Director of Operations of the EFCC.

He is one of the young officers elevated following the appointment of Bawa over a year and half ago.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Maiduguri in 2000 and subsequently obtained his Post-Graduate Diploma in Criminal Justice Education from University of Virginia, United States of America in 2011.

Chukkol, who joined the EFCC in 2003 and rose through the ranks to become a Principal Detective Investigator, has attended other trainings such as FBI National Academy, Quantico Session 244 2011, and United States Telecommunications Training Institute Cybersecurity and Spectrum Monitoring 2010.

Meanwhile, the suspended Chairman has honoured an invitation by the Department of State Services (DSS) for questioning concerning his activities while in office.

DSS Spokesperson, Dr Peter Afunanya, said Bawa’s ” invitation relates to some investigative activities concerning him.”
