The Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) has recently released the box office figures for May 19-21, 2023, revealing the impressive success of Nollywood films in the midst of fierce competition from international releases.
While Universal’s action-packed Fast X stormed to the top of the box office with a staggering ₦86.8 million in its opening weekend, Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 held strong in second place, adding ₦6.7 million in its third weekend, amassing a total of ₦75.6 million.

The Bride Price – ₦18 million
Regarded as the first Igbo indigenous film to secure the widest theatrical release, The Bride Price is a captivating comedy drama that revolves around Aloy, a spare parts dealer with limited education. When faced with exorbitant dowry demands for his wife, Aloy severs ties with her family, despite her father’s reluctance.
Starring Zubby Michael, Nkem Owoh, Ebele Okaro, Funny Bone, Juliana Olayode, Beverly Oh, Akinola Akano, and Trinity Ugonabo, the film is skillfully directed by Okey Oku and produced by Trinity Ugonabo. Over the weekend, The Bride Price added ₦2 million to its box office earnings.
Honey Money – ₦31.9 million
Directed by Ekene Som Mekwunye, Honey Money follows the story of Tobiloba, a young man in his late 20s from a humble background. As Tobiloba begins to flaunt luxurious possessions he shouldn’t be able to afford, his parents vehemently oppose his newfound lifestyle. Unbeknownst to them, Tobiloba is involved with a notorious gang.
Featuring an ensemble cast including Timini Egbuson, Nancy Isime, Iyabo Ojo, Femi Branch, Junior Pope Odonwodo, and Lina Idoko, Honey Money is currently in its fourth week of screening.
The Kujus Again – ₦49 million
The comedy drama, The Kujus Again, swiftly earned over ₦17 million after its premiere on April 21, 2023. Now in its fifth week, the movie raked in an additional ₦1 million over the weekend, bringing its total earnings to ₦49 million.
Directed by Biodun Stephen, the sequel to Introducing The Kujus (2020) continues the heartwarming and hilarious journey of the Kuju family, complete with engagements and weddings. Notable additions to the cast include Mavin Records CEO Don Jazzy, DJ Big N, Ben Lugo, Sophia Augustine, and Lilo Aderogba.
Arinfesesi – ₦4.6 million
Written by David Osarieme and directed/produced by Akinnayajo Babatunde, Arinfesesi chronicles a road trip that takes a dark turn when danger lurks around every corner.

The film features an impressive cast including Akin Lewis, Jaiye Kuti, Bolaji Ogunmola, Shawn Faqua, Oyindamola Sanni, and Jaye Kuti.
The Bloom Boys – ₦18 million
Penned by Awal Abdullateef, The Bloom Boys narrates the story of Kemi and her influential mother’s desperate attempts to secure a marriage with a billionaire’s son.
The star-studded cast includes Timini Egbuson, Tobi Bakre, Bolanle Ninalowo, Shaffy Bello, Tina Mba, Gbenga Titiloye, Segun Arinze, and Diane Russet.
Despite being in theaters for four weeks, The Bloom Boys has accumulated ₦18.5 million, securing the 10th place in the box office rankings.
