AMVCA 2023: Jadesola Osiberu’s “Brotherhood” Takes Home Best Movie In West Africa

The Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) 2023 celebrated the outstanding achievements of African cinema, and one film that stood out among the rest was “Brotherhood,” a gripping Nigerian crime-action thriller.

The film, produced by Jade Osiberu and featuring a stellar cast including Tobi Bakre, Boma Akpore, Falz, Basketmouth, Sam Dede, Ronke Oshodi Oke, Toni Tones, Zubby Micheal, Mr Macaroni, and many others, took home the highly coveted ‘Best Movie in West Africa’ award.

“Brotherhood” hit the big screens across Africa on September 23, 2022, simultaneously captivating audiences in Nigeria, Cameroon, Benin Republic, Burkina Faso, Togo, Niger Republic, Senegal, Congo, Rwanda, Gabon, Guinea, and Madagascar.

The film’s intense narrative and impressive production quality resonated with viewers, earning it recognition as one of the finest works in West African cinema.

Another notable winner of the evening was acclaimed Nigerian producer and director, Kunle Afolayan, who secured the AMVCA 2023 award for ‘Best Indigenous Language’ (Yoruba) with his film, “Anikulapo.”

With an impressive 16 nominations, “Anikulapo” emerged as one of the leading contenders of the night, alongside “Brotherhood” and “Shanty Town,” both receiving 11 nominations.

The event, now in its 9th edition, took place at the prestigious Eko Convention Centre, Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos.

Regarded as one of Africa’s most prominent entertainment events, the AMVCA drew a galaxy of stars, creating a mesmerizing display of vibrant black carpet moments. Toke Makinwa, Uti Nwachukwu, Sika Osei, and VJ Adams skilfully hosted the black carpet, entertaining and engaging the celebrities as they graced the event.

An exciting tradition of the AMVCA is the opportunity for viewers to participate by choosing their best-dressed male and female celebrities of the night. This interactive element adds an extra layer of anticipation and involvement, allowing the audience to be part of the glamour and style.

The hosts for the evening were popular Nigerian TV and radio host, IK Osakioduwa, and Miss Universe 2019, South African Zozi Tunzi. Their dynamic and charismatic presence ensured a captivating and seamless flow of the event, leaving the audience thoroughly entertained throughout the night.
