“The people of Lagos State have spoken,” Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, says after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced his election for a second term in office early Monday morning.
At exactly 1:15 am pm on Monday, the Returning Officer of the governorship election, Prof. Adenike Oladiji declared the 57-year-old the winner of the election.
Join our WhatsApp ChannelHe emerged victorious by beating 15 other political parties with 762,134 votes after winning convincingly in 19 of the state’s 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs).
Moments after the declaration, Governor Sanwo-Olu said to a cheering crowd: “To all of our fellow contestants, we want to salute you for participating in the democratic process, but Lagosians have spoken and have spoken well. They have spoken loud”.
He then extended his hand of fellowship to all the contestants, saying: “In the true spirit of sportsmanship, if you indeed believe that you want to serve this state, you have an opportunity with us and we will open our doors to listen and to give you a space in this government”.

Sanwo-Olu’s closest rival – the candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Gbadebo Rhodes-Viviour – recorded 312,329 votes. He won in one LGA – Amuwo-Odofin where he scored 34,860 votes as against 17,756 by Sanwo-Olu.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s candidate, Mr Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran pulled 62,449 votes to come a distance third.
Sanwo-Olu’s performance represents a progression over the 2019 result in which Sanwo-Olu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), had won by polling 739,445 votes, followed by his counterpart of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Jimi Agbaje who had 206,141 votes.
APC’s biggest haul of votes were from Alimoso LGA (83,631), Ikorodu (64,697) and Mushin 52,249.
Alimoso LGA delivered the highest votes for APC – 83,631 – where Labour Party had 37,136 votes.
