This year was packed to the brim with great movies to the point that it’s hard to narrow down the best of this remarkable year to just 5 films, but in ascending order, below are the Top 5 Movies of 2022 according to PBA ratings.
1. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is a 2022 American mystery, a sequel to the 2019 film Knives Out, written and directed by Rian Johnson and produced by Johnson and Ram Bergman. It has an all-new cast of characters, with Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc being the only common thread between the two films. Detective Benoit Blanc, however, takes on a new role, as he takes on a new case revolving around a tech billionaire and his old friends.
The ensemble cast includes Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr, Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista. This is a solid film, if you’re yet to see it, I strongly recommend it.
2. RRR
I have always loved Indian movies, so imagine my joy when I first saw the thriller of this action-packed movie earlier this year. RRR is a movie with big action, compelling twists, and endearing characters. Nothing about RRR is small: the size of the crowd scenes, the scale of the battles, the sadistic villainy of the British, and the three-hour running time.
It was the most expensive Indian movie ever made (an estimated $72m) and it shows. The ‘Rs’ stand for ‘rise, roar, and revolt’, themes that play out in a Raj-era storyline about British colonialism and an abducted child that occasionally pokes through all the insane fight scenes, razzed-up dance routines, exploding trains, and tigers.

3. The Woman King
A movie with Viola Davis and John Boyega about women empowerment? Sign me up. It was so much fun watching Viola Davis and her Amazonian warriors train up and fight the bad guys in 1800s Africa, and it’s moving when you realize how empowering it is. The Woman King is a 2022 American epic alternate history action drama film about the Agojie, an all-female warrior unit that protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey during the 17th to 19th centuries.
The film stars Viola Davis as a general who trains the next generation of warriors to fight their enemies. It is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and written by Dana Stevens, based on a story she wrote with Maria Bello. The film also stars Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and John Boyega.
4. Top Gun: Maverick
Okay, hands up who saw this practically flawless blockbuster coming? I did, and I know a few people probably did. This is the long-awaited squeal to the blockbuster, Top Gun, it was originally due two years ago.
Tom Cruise reprises his starring role as the naval aviator Maverick. It was based on the characters of the original film created by Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr. The film also stars Val Kilmer, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, and Ed Harris. After thirty years, Maverick is still pushing the envelope as a top naval aviator but must confront ghosts of his past when he leads TOP GUN’s elite graduates on a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those chosen to fly it.
5. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
If at this time, you’ve not seen the new Black Panther, it is assumed you live under the rock. ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’, is a sequel to the 2018 blockbuster film, an American action superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character.
The loud absence of Chadwick Boseman, who played King T’Challa in the first Black Panther film, is not something that can be filled in a sequel, and the Director of the film, Ryan Coogler, doesn’t try to do so. While other Marvel pictures can set for multiverse out of questions of mortality should they so wish, Coogler leans on the pain shared by Boseman’s colleagues and fans alike and crafts an unexpectedly sober picture that explores the grieving process.
The film begins with a funeral for the deceased King T’Challa. Shuri (Letitia Wright) and Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett) are dressed in white, following the black coffin, whose top features the Black Panther mask and the crossed arms of the Wakanda salute.
