17th Headies Awards: Tems, Semi Win Big As Mohbad Shines Again

Popular Nigerian rapper, Tochukwu Ojogwu, known as Odumodublvck, who clinched the Next Rated category  of the just concluded 17th Headies Award, has urged up and coming artist not to be discouraged by initial rejection and negative comments.

The 31-year-old expressed delight that his sound was resonating with Nigerians despite the odds he’s faced, adding that his story should serve as a motivation.

The star-studded event dubbed Back to Base’, featured performances from some of the industry’s brightest talents and gathered leading figures from across the Nigerian music scene.Temilade Openiyi, Tems, won the Best Recording of the year with her song Burning’ just as Simisola Bolatito Kosoko, Simi clinched Song Writer of the year with ‘Stranger.’

Highlight of the event held at the Landmark Event Centre, Lekki, marking a vibrant return to Nigeria after two years abroad, was the posthumous victory of Afrobeat singer, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad. Mohbad who died on 12 September, 2023 at 27, won ‘Best Street-hop Artist’ with his song ‘Ask About Me.’

The tribute reads in part: “Some voices are too powerful to be forgotten, some spirits shine so bright they leave a mark that cannot be erased. Mohbad was one of those stars. From the streets of Lagos to the heart of millions, Mohbad’s music was more than sound; it was a movement… Rest in peace, Mohbad, your light will never fade.”
