On 18 March 2025, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the oil-rich state, suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State House of Assembly.
He appointed Ibas, a former chief of Naval Staff, as sole administrator to oversee the affairs of the state for an initial period of six months. Tinubu’s action has generated nationwide reactions as many, including political leaders, human rights lawyers and activists, have condemned it. They argued that in line with provisions of the 1999 constitution, the president lacks the power to suspend a democratically elected governor.
Since his appointment, Ibas has made sweeping decisions, such as suspending all political appointees who worked with Fubara. He has also appointed administrators for local government areas in the state.
