On Wednesday, 19 February, Ozigbo, an ally of the Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi, said in a statement titled “A New Chapter: A Bold Step For Anambra’s Future” that he has formally submitted his resignation letter to his ward’s chairman.

Ozigbo, who was gubernatorial candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the Anambra 2021 election, said his unwavering commitment to the greater vision for the state guided this decision.

He said that before the formal announcement, he had duly informed Peter Obi of his decision “as a mark of my deep respect for his leadership and the principles we have shared on this journey” and equally notified the National Chairman of the party Barr. Julius Abure.

“At every defining moment in history, our choices shape the future we dream of. Today, as I take a new step in my journey of service, I do so with an unshakable resolve, a clear vision, and the unwavering belief that Anambra’s best days are ahead of us.

“I joined politics not for personal ambition but because I believe in the boundless potential of our people. I believe in a leadership that is compassionate, that inspires, and that truly serves the people. That mission has not changed; it has only become stronger.

“Recent events have made one thing clear: the time has come for us to build something new, something bold, something that speaks to the hopes and aspirations of every Anambra son and daughter.

“That is why, after deep reflection and broad consultations, I have chosen to take a different path, one that is not about party lines, but about our people. About progress. About a movement that will bring real transformation to our great state,” Ozigbo stated.

He encouraged his supporters to remain resolute as he moves on with a renewed zeal to work for a better Anambra State.

In a video posted on his X handle, Ozigbo, who appeared emotional, was heard expressing disappointment over some unsavoury events in the party in recent times.

He joined the Labour Party in the build up to the 2023 general elections and strongly supported Obi, becoming one of his campaign aides.

However, he alleged that while some political parties’ national chairmen were calling him to come and run for governorship under their ticket, some elements in the Labour Party that he has suffered for, wanted him out of the party.

He said there are manifestations of injustice and asserted that it won’t be possible for the party to succeed with any foundation built on injustice.

“If you sow injustice, you’re gonna reap injustice,” Ozigbo stated.

“I feel very sad doing this because I know it is the party I have laboured for the most. It shouldn’t have happened, but it has come to this.”

He said he sent a letter to Obi thanking him for his leadership, visibility and the opportunity of walking with him.

He urged the party members to pay attention to messages he will release very soon, adding that it should be their collective desire to unseat the incumbent governor and bring better change to the state.

It is not yet clear which party he will join next to contest the upcoming governorship election.
