Nigeria Army Confirms Death Of Soldier As Driver Rams Into Troops In Lagos

The Nigerian Army has confirmed that one soldier died after a vehicle ran into a troop, during the bi-annual march in Yaba, Lagos on Friday.

In a statement on Friday, the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 81 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Ayeni, confirmed that the accident in the Yaba area, led to the death of a soldier and several others sustaining injuries.

Ayeni also confirmed that the body of the deceased soldier has been deposited in the mortuary, while the injured are currently receiving medical care at 68 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Yaba, Lagos.

“Headquarters 81 Division Nigerian Army (NA) wishes to inform the general public of a tragic incident that occurred this morning, Friday 31 January 2025, during the Bi-Annual Route March, near Myhoung Barracks in Yaba, Lagos State.

“Tragically, a driver in a private vehicle recklessly ran into the participating troops resulting in the death of a soldier with others sustaining various degrees of injuries,” part of the statement read.

The spokesperson stated that 81 Division Military Police in conjunction with other relevant security agencies are conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to this incident.

The statement further stated that the Major General of the 81 Division, Farouk Mijinyawa, has expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and also wished the injured soldiers quick recovery.

While reaffirming the Division’s commitment to discharging its duty within its areas of operations, he assured the public that investigation is currently ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The GOC also called for calm among the public as investigation is being conducted.

“The Division remains steadfast in its commitment to training and readiness to discharge its duties despite this devastating event. Furthermore, this tragic loss will not deter the Division’s dedication to safeguarding the lives and properties within its Area of Operations in accordance with the NA’s constitutional mandate.”
