Palisades Fire: The Most Destructive in LA History

The Palisades Fire, described as the most destructive in Los Angeles history, has damaged or destroyed over 5,300 structures. The fire’s devastation surpassed the 2008 Sayre Fire, which destroyed 604 structures. Significant landmarks, including parts of Palisades Charter High School, were lost to the flames.

Actor Billy Crystal and his wife, Janice, lost their home of 45 years, highlighting the fire’s personal impact.

Additional Fires Adding to the Destruction

The Eaton Fire north of Pasadena has burned over 5,000 structures, including homes and schools. Meanwhile, the Kenneth Fire in West Hills rapidly expanded, prompting more evacuations. The Sunset Fire in the Hollywood Hills threatened iconic locations like the Hollywood Bowl but was brought under control, with evacuation orders lifted the following morning.

Federal Assistance and Local Response

President Joe Biden announced additional federal funding to assist California in battling the Los Angeles wildfires. This support includes covering the costs of hazardous materials removal and temporary shelters for 180 days.

Governor Gavin Newsom noted that over 1,400 firefighting personnel have been deployed, with additional teams arriving from neighbouring states.

Evacuations and Celebrity Impact

The wildfires have forced nearly 180,000 people to evacuate, including several Hollywood celebrities. Mark Hamill, Mandy Moore, and James Woods were among those who had to leave their homes.

Moore revealed she lost her home in Altadena, underlining the widespread impact on residents from various walks of life.

Health and Air Quality Concerns

The fires have led to severe air quality issues, affecting millions across Southern California. The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued advisories due to the thick smoke and ash. Dr. Puneet Gupta warned that wildfire smoke could exacerbate heart conditions and asthma, posing a significant health risk to residents.
