Whether you’re travelling for tourism, studies, business, or family reunification, here’s an updated step-by-step guide to simplify the process.

Determine Your Visa Type

Like other countries, Germany offers several visa categories depending on the purpose of your travel. These include:

  1. Schengen Visa (Short-Stay Visa)
  • This is valid for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
  • It is ideal for tourism, business trips, visiting family/friends, or attending short-term events.
  • It allows entry to all Schengen countries, including Germany.
  1. National Visa (Long-Stay Visa)
  • This visa is required for stays longer than 90 days.
  • The categories include study visas, work visas, family reunification visas, and research visas.
  1. Airport Transit Visa
  • This is a 24-hour valid visa.
  • It is for travellers transiting through German airports without entering the country.
  • It is not required if you already hold a Schengen visa or are a citizen of specific exempted countries.
  1. Chancenkarte: This is a 12-month visa for non-EU nationals with an academic degree or professional qualification to find employment or pursue additional qualifications.
  2. Visa for language acquisition: This is a visa for taking German classes in Germany.
  3. Training/Internship Visa: This is a visa for attending training programs or internships.
  4. Trade Fair & Exhibitions Visa: This is a visa for participating in trade fairs or exhibitions.
  5. Cultural Purposes Visa: This visa is for participating in cultural, sports, or religious events, or working as part of a film crew.

Note: Ensure that you choose the correct visa type based on the purpose of your trip. This is because each visa type has its own unique requirements.

Prepare Your Documents

Ensure all your documents are complete and accurate. The commonly required items include:

General Documents

  • Completed visa application form (printed and signed).
  • Valid passport (with at least two blank pages and valid for six months after your intended return date).
  • Two recent passport-sized photos (meeting Schengen visa standards: white background, neutral expression, no glasses).
  • Proof of financial means (bank statements, sponsorship letters, or proof of scholarship for students).
  • Travel itinerary (flight bookings and hotel reservations/other proof of accommodation).
  • Health insurance that covers €30,000 minimum.
  • Supporting documents for your visa type (e.g., admission letter for students or employment contract).

Additional Documents for Specific Visa Types

  • Study visa: Admission letter from a recognised German institution, proof of blocked account (minimum €11,208 annually).
  • Work visa: Employment contract or job offer letter, proof of qualifications.
  • Family reunification visa: Marriage certificate, birth certificate, or proof of family ties.

The Preliminary Review Stage

After the online portal registration, you will have to wait for your application to be reviewed by German officials.

They will also inform you through the portal if additional information is needed to continue your application process.

Schedule an Appointment

After completing the application form and preliminary review stage, the next step is to schedule an in-person appointment.

You will be invited to a German consulate or embassy for an in-person appointment.

During this appointment, you will have to verify your identity so ensure that you go with the required documents. You will also provide your biometric data, such as fingerprints and photographs.

Attend the Appointment

On the day of your appointment, make sure that you

  • Arrive early with all the required documents.
  • Submit your application and pay the visa fee (typically €80 for Schengen visas, converted to Naira).
  • Provide biometric data (fingerprints and photographs).

Wait for Processing

After you have completed all the application steps, then you will have to wait for your application to be processed.

Visa processing times can vary but are typically within:

  • 15 working days for Schengen visas and
  • Several weeks to months for national visas.

With the new portal, you can easily track your application status to stay up-to-date with the progress and know if any additional information is required.

Collect Your Passport

If your application is approved, then you’ll be given your visa, which will be stamped into your passport.

But if denied, then there might be an option to appeal within one month of receiving the rejection letter.

Tips for a Successful Visa Application

To ensure success in your visa application:

  • Provide truthful information in your application and during interviews.
  • Use folders to organise your documents and keep originals and photocopies separately.
  • If you’re called in for an interview, answer the questions clearly and confidently.
  • Start your application process at least three months before your intended travel date.

Final Thoughts

With these easy steps, you can proceed to apply for your German visa online. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Apply early
  • Double-check your documents and
  • Prepare well for in-person appointments and interviews.

This will increase your chances of a successful German visa application.
