1. Corruption Allegation: Opposition Backs OBJ as Presidency Attacks him

The Presidency on Monday berated former President Olusegun Obasanjo over his claim that corruption has reached a fatal stage in the country. 

However, the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party and the New Nigeria Peoples Party have backed the former statesman on the Issues he raised during his keynote address at the Chinua Achebe Leadership Forum, Yale University, New Haven, United States of America, on Sunday.

2.  Naira Depreciates to N1,690/$ At Official Market

The Naira opened the week on a negative note, as it further depreciated to N1,690.37 per dollar on Monday at the official market. This indicated a N38.12 loss for the naira when compared to N1,652.25 per dollar last week Friday, in the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM).

 3. G20 leaders inaugurate Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty

In the course of the opening session of the 19th Heads of State and Government Summit of the Group of 20 (G20) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil,  the Group of 20 (G20) World Leaders inaugurated a Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty.

The alliance which was signed by all member countries empowered a Task Force to implement practical activities between 2025 and 2030 to help accelerate the elimination of hunger and reduction of poverty.

4. CAF Awards: Lookman, Nwabali named in five-man shortlist, Ekong out

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali have both been named in the final five-man shortlist for the CAF player and keeper of the year awards but defender William Troost-Ekong wasn’t on the final list.

The awards which is set to take place in Marrakech, Morocco by 16 December, has Atalanta Europa League hero, Lookman, leading the final shortlist for the men’s Player of The Year Award and Chippa United goalkeeper, Nwabali shortlisted for the goalkeeper gong.

5. Nigeria loses to Rwanda in final AFCON qualifier

Nigeria’s Super Eagles lost to Rwanda during the conclusion of their Africa Cup of Nations Group D qualifiers.

The match which was held on Monday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, had Nigeria losing 2-1 to Rwanda.

6. Excitement as Man United Indicate interest in Oshimen

Manchester United’s reported interest in Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has sparked excitement among fans.

According to Italian journalist Gerardo Fasano, United’s new head coach Ruben Amorim is keen on bringing the former Lille striker to Old Trafford, “Manchester United is said to be on the trail of Victor Osimhen. I have been told that the English, through mister Amorim, could include the former Bologna striker Zirkzee in the negotiations for Osimhen.”

7. UK Urges Nigeria to Tackle Market Distortions By Government Agencies

The United Kingdom has urged Nigeria to expedite its economic reforms by tackling market-distorting practices that are linked to government-owned enterprises, saying that it hinders trade and investment.

The UK’s Permanent Representative to the World Trade Organisation, Simon Manley, made this call during Nigeria’s Trade Policy Review in Geneva on Monday.

8. Ekiti Governor Abiodun Swears in new Council Chairmen

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun swore in the newly elected chairmen of the state’s local governments on Monday. 

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony held at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, Abiodun challenged the newly elected local government leaders to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people at the grassroots.

9. IMF Recommends Reform Measures for Nigeria

The International Monetary Fund, (IMF), has rolled out recommendations on reform measures in Nigeria following the backdrop of frustrations faced by the general public in Nigeria and some other Sub-Saharan African countries undergoing economic reforms.

IMF recommendations include “greater attention to communication and engagement strategies, reform design, compensatory measures, and rebuilding trust in public institutions”.

10. 2025 Proposed Budget Under Attack By Analysts

The Federal government’s proposed 2025 budget has come under attack by industry groups and analysts who expressed their disappointment over the assumptions, benchmarks and figures in the budget.

The Director General of Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, (LCCI), Dr Chinyere Almona in a statement yesterday had said that the assumptions of an exchange rate of N1,400 per dollar and an inflation rate of 15.8 per cent, in particular, are unrealistic.

11. Zenith Bank to hold Zenith Tech Fair 4.0

Zenith Bank Plc is set to hold the Fourth Edition of the Zenith Bank Tech Fair, tagged “Future Forward 4.0:  Embedded Finance, Cybersecurity & Growth Imperatives – The Impact of AI”, this   Thursday at the Eko Convention Centre, Eko Hotels & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

In a statement by the bank, it said, “The fair will showcase leading technological innovations that cut across Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Risk Management, Compliance, Financial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, and Communication Technologies, among others. The event will also feature a Start-up Pitch Competition – Zecathon – to identify innovative startups, panel discussions, masterclasses and exhibitions.”

12. Canada Stops Conversion of Study Permits to Permanent residency for foreign students

Canada has stopped the conversion of international students’ study permits into permanent residency under its latest immigration policies.

This new regulation mandates that international students return to their home countries upon the expiration of their study visas in Canada.

13. DSS Arrests Ladi Adebutu

The 2023 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election in Ogun State, Ladi Adebutu, has been arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS).

This is in connection with an incident that occurred in the Iperu area of Ogun State on Saturday, during which Adebutu was alleged to have mobilised thugs and illegal police operatives to disrupt the local government elections across the local government area.

14. NERC Orders DisCos To Replace Obsolete Meters Free

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has ordered Distribution Companies (DisCos) to replace faulty and obsolete meters for free.

15. Rivers State Assembly Sets 29 Oct as Anniversary of Attack on Legislative House

The Martins Amaewhule-led faction of the Rivers State Assembly has set 29 October date as the anniversary of what it calls “unprovoked attacks on Rivers legislature.”

This resolution was reached yesterday during its plenary at the auditorium of the Assembly Quarters on Aba Road.

16. 2025 Appropriation Bill Targets N34.8trn revenue

The Federal Government targets N34.8 trillion in revenue in the 2025 Appropriation Bill.

The Bill also projects a comprehensive debt restructuring strategy aimed at freeing up funds for critical infrastructure development.

17. CITN Releases Results For Its Exams

The Governing Council of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) has released the results of the October 2024 Diet Examination.

In a statement, the Registrar/Chief Executive, Afolake Oso, lauded the hard work put into the examination by the students and advised them to check the established Telegram group as well as their dashboards on the CITN portal for their individual results and further updates.

18. Anambra Family Appeals to IGP over Intimidation from Wealthy Individuals

The Okwesi family in Akwuzu, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, has appealed to the Inspector General of Police, stating that they were being forced to give up their land by wealthy individuals and not kidnappers as they were tagged.

Charles Okwesi, chairman of the Okwesi family, claimed that the Chief Executive Officer of Pineleaf Estate, Bishop Dr. Onyeka Nzekwesi, used the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), to arrest them on their own land accusing them of being kidnappers and unknown gunmen terrorizing the area.

19. Oborevwori Donates 31 Vehicles to Police, Other Security Agencies

Delta State Governor, Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has donated 31 operational vehicles to the police and other security agencies in the state in order to strengthen their operations.

While presenting the vehicles yesterday in Asaba, to the Inspector General of Police (IG), Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, the governor said that the presentation was to enhance the joint security operations in the state, codenamed “Operation Delta Sweep”.

20. Passenger Luggage Delay to Attract $170, N10,000 fines respectively – NCAA

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has said that it will impose fines of $170 and N10,000 on foreign and local airlines, respectively for delayed passengers’ luggage.

This was disclosed by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, while speaking on Monday during a roadshow organised by NCAA at the Lagos airport to sensitise passengers who will be travelling during the yuletide, where he assured that the regulatory agency would implement the sanctions against any erring airline to the letter.
