1. Grid Collapses: Nigerian Government Orders Immediate Replacement of Equipment 

As part of the recommendations to stop the incessant collapse of the national grid, the Minister for Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has ordered the immediate replacement of aged equipment.

Adelabu has also directed the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and all other relevant agencies of the ministry to begin immediate implementation of the recommendations of the inter-agency committee which has been set up to address the incessant grid collapses in the power sector.

2. Naira Appreciates to N1,639/$ At Official Market

The Naira appreciated to N1,639.5 per dollar at the official market on Thursday, from N1,681.65 per dollar on Wednesday, according to the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM) published on the FMDQ Securities and Exchange platform. This indicates N42.15 appreciation for the naira.

3. Hunger Crisis Will Hit 133.1m Nigerians in 2025 – Report

According to a report by The Cadre Harmonisé on food and nutrition insecurity analysis, no fewer than 133.1 Nigerians would face a global hunger crisis in 2025.

This was disclosed in a statement on Thursday by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), which said the report was prepared by the federal government and supported by partners, such as the World Food Programme (WFP), and the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund, UNICEF, among others.

4. Nigeria Undergoing Fundamental Reset After Subsidy Removal — Soludo

Governor of Anambra State, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, has stated that Nigeria is undergoing a fundamental reset, following the removal of subsidies by President Bola Tinubu.

He made this remark during the 13th convocation lecture of Veritas University in Abuja, on Thursday.

5. Nigeria’s Economy Gradually Recovering – Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, had said yesterday, that Nigeria’s economy was gradually making a rebound, while attributing the progress to sustained reforms being implemented by his administration across various sectors.

He spoke during the opening ceremony of the All Nigerian Editors’ Conference (ANEC) which was held in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital where he applauded the media for its fight for democracy and the successes recorded by the country in its uninterrupted 25 years’ democratic journey.

6. Two Loses Life, Donkeys killed in Jigawa Auto Crash

A lone accident which occurred in Shuwarin town, Kiyawa Local Government Area of Jigawa State, on Monday, has destroyed lives.

According to eyewitness account, the accident which involved a motor vehicle, DAF with registration number NGU 498 XA, driven by 34-year-old Mohd Hassan from Potiskum LGA, Yobe State to Enugu State was loaded with 100 donkeys and passengers on board. The driver lost control of the vehicle and it fell down, resulting in the loss of two lives – Innani Abubakar, a 45-year-old woman, and Kalifa Adamu, a 30-year-old man. Also, about 40 donkeys died on the spot.

7. Oando Wins ‘Deal of the Year’ award

In recognition of the recently completed landmark $783m acquisition of the Nigerian Agip Oil Company from the Italian Energy firm Eni on August 22, 2024, Oando Plc, has won the ‘Deal of the Year’ award at Africa Energy Week 2024.

This award was announced in a statement on Thursday with the indigenous oil company expressing its delight as it beat other high-profile deals in the sector and across Africa.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has declared nine persons wanted over terrorism and violent extremism in the North-east region.

14. Policeman Dies in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Auto Crash

A multiple auto crash occurred Thursday, on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway which claimed the life of a policeman.

The accident involved a Volvo truck with number plate FKJ 484 YA, which was laden with goods and driving inward Arepo. The driver apparently experienced brake failure and crashed into a Mercedes bus in motion, on Kara end of the expressway. In the driver’s bid to control the truck, it fell on a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number BWR 371 XC, which was parked by the roadside. A policeman with an undisclosed identity, attached to the Mobile Police Division, Ikeja, who was riding a motorcycle to the office, got trapped under the truck and died on the spot.

The initiative which is tagged Maternal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII) was launched during the Joint Annual Health Review (JAR) organised by the ministry in Abuja.

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has suspended its strike action and restored full services to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano following the intervention of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf who met with the leadership of the association on Thursday.

In a video statement released via Instagram on Thursday, the Boot driver urging everyone to move on from the incident.
