The Internet is bustling with congratulatory messages from world leaders to Donald Trump on his re-election as the 47th president of the United States of America in the US 2024 election.

While many are expectant and excited to collaborate and build relationships with the US with Trump as president-elect, there’s still much to be said about how Trump’s re-election will benefit Nigerians abroad.

Trump’s policies lean toward stricter immigration controls and a proposed end of birthright citizenship, which could make migrating to the US tough.

Still, there are some benefits that Nigerians abroad can look forward to during Trump’s administration:

Enhanced Business and Investment Opportunities

Trump has had his focus on lowering taxes, including corporate tax, for a long time. Doing this could create an environment for Nigerian entrepreneurs or investors in the US to maximise profit.

Reducing taxes could lead to improved market conditions and access to capital sources, making it easier for Nigerians to start and run businesses.

Also, by bringing supply chains to the US rather than outsourcing, Trump intends to turn the US into a “manufacturing superpower,” which would require more manpower, thus providing increased employment as well as investment opportunities for Nigerians abroad.

Immigration Reforms Benefiting Skilled Workers

Although Trump’s immigration policies place a tight rein on easy access to America, with his interest in reforming the visa system to favour skilled professionals, highly educated and skilled Nigerians could see an avenue to benefit from this.

Trump’s immigration policies offer a pathway for Nigerians in fields like tech, health, and education to access work visas and residency.

His immigration policy also proposes giving foreign graduates of US universities automatic green cards, which will benefit Nigerian students in the US as well.

Increased US-Africa Economic Ties

During his previous term, Trump expressed his interest in increasing US-Africa economic ties and even took a step in this direction with initiatives like ‘Prosper Africa’ which aimed to expand trade with the continent.

Following this suit, his new administration may also amplify US-Nigeria economic partnerships and open up more trade as well as investment channels that will be of benefit to Nigerians abroad who are involved in cross-border businesses.

Trump’s plan to end inflation would also improve the economy for trading within the US and between continents like Africa.

Support for Family-Friendly Immigration Policies

Another positive side to Trump’s strict immigration policies is that it could open an avenue for Nigerians in the US to easily bring over family members legally who meet specific qualifications that position them as skilled workers.

Moreover, Trump’s ‘mass deportation’ and strict immigration policies are largely targeted at undocumented immigrants, so legal Nigerian immigrants may have access to educational programmes, family-related policies, and sponsorships in this administration.

Boosted US Dollar Value and Economic Stability

Trump’s economic policies also favour a strong dollar, which could be beneficial to Nigerians abroad who send money back to their families at home.

A strong or stable dollar will lead to higher conversion rates and increased purchasing power for those who will be receiving it back in Nigeria.

Also, this administration’s policy could stabilise international trade and aid businesses for Nigerian exporters relying on the US as a key market.

The results of the US 2024 election with Trump’s emerging as the president-elect give Nigerians living abroad legally potential benefits to look forward to with new policies that will be rolled out in the course of the administration.
