The small New Hampshire town of Dixville Notch has continued its unique role in the US election by being the first place in the country to cast and declare its votes.

At the stroke of midnight, Dixville Notch residents split their ballots evenly, with Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump each receiving three votes.

Dixville Notch has a long-standing tradition of early voting that dates back decades, symbolising the community’s civic pride.

Every election year, the town’s few eligible voters gather just past midnight to mark their ballots, attracting national attention despite its tiny population and limited political influence on the broader US Election.

In this latest vote, only six voters participated. This tight-knit community produced a 3-3 tie, drawing curiosity across the nation but offering little insight into broader trends for the US election.

While Dixville Notch’s votes historically mark the start of the US Election, they don’t predict the outcome in New Hampshire or the national result. In the 2020 US Election, for instance, the town gave all five votes to Joe Biden, who went on to win both the state and the presidency.

Aside from the presidential vote, the New Hampshire gubernatorial race also featured in the midnight voting, where Republican Kelly Ayotte took five votes, leaving one for her Democratic rival Joyce Craig. With registered voters in Dixville Notch spanning both major parties and independents, this early vote gives a snapshot of the local mood but not necessarily a glimpse into the future outcome of the US election.

Dixville Notch’s tradition, celebrated by many as a moment of community and political engagement, will continue to draw interest, setting the stage for the full scope of results to unfold as the US election progresses.
