Nff condemns attack killing of supersports crew

Aftermath Of AFCON Qualifier: NFF, Others Mourn SuperSports Victims, Call For Justice

The Nigeria Football Federation  has described as unfortunate and regrettable attack and killing of three SuperSports crew members who were on their way to Uyo to cover the Super Eagles against Knights AFCON qualifier match on Friday.

The attack, which claimed the lives of a cameraman, a policeman and the crew driver the Glass House noted, overshadowed the joy of winning the match throwing the entire sporting community in Nigeria and beyond into mourning.

NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau, in a statement expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims.

“Information gathered on the incident revealed that the bandits opened fire on the bus in which the SuperSport operatives were travelling, with Staff and security personnel on board, and the attack immediately resulted in the deaths of a cameraman, a police officer, and the bus driver,” the NFF said

The statement added, “Yes, we won the match against Libya and took three points, but the fact that three lives were lost created a situation in which we were unable to celebrate properly, and it hurts seriously to even think back at the unfortunate incident.”

Recall that unknown gunmen ambushed and attacked the crew on the Ihiala-Orlu Road in Anambra State, on Tuesday, 8th October 2024, while travelling to cover Nigeria vs Libya 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which ended in a 1-0, win for the Super Eagles on Friday, October 11. Some of the crew members according to report were kidnapped and later released while at least two escaped in the course of the attack. More facts concerning the attack are still being awaited from security operatives.

Condemnation of the heinous act has continued to pour in from far and near with many describing the attack as a dent on the country’s image.

Reacting to the incident Senator Shehu Sani taking to his X @ShehuSani said “The killing of the three @SuperSportTV crew on assignment to Uyo, South South Nigeria for the @afcon2025is a national tragedy.

The Anambra bandits have wasted the precious lives of a dedicated and passionate sports crew.All hands must be on deck by our security forces to bring these criminals to http://justice. My condolences to their families and the Super Sports team.I call on the Sports Minister @OwanEnohto immortalise the deceased. May their souls rest in peace, Amen.
