Super Eagles Goalkeeper Okoye Injured In Sparta Rotterdam’s Defeat To Ajax, Risks AFCON Miss Out

Super Eagles first choice goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye suffered a shoulder injury on Sunday afternoon as his Dutch Eredivisie side Sparta Rotterdam lost 1-0 to Ajax.

 

 

Okoye who recently signed a five year deal with English Premier League club Watford but will remain at his current club for the rest of the 2021-2022 season was substituted off in the 24th minute after a collision with Ajax forward Danilo and replaced by Benjamin van Leer.

 

 

The club gave little away in the form of information regarding Okoye’s setback and only reported about the injury passively on its Twitter account.

 

 

“Sparta are forced to make a first change due to injury to Okoye,” the club said.

 

 

Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr and his goalkeeping coaches will be sweating over the latest injury news involving their player and will be hoping for a his speedy recovery ahead of camping for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in January which kicks off on January 9, 2022.

 

 

The countdown to the Africa Cup of Nations continues and it is 42 days before the opening game of the African Mundial on Sunday.

 

 

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen is loky to miss the tournament a horrifying facial and cheekbone injuries in a Serie A league game against Inter Milan.

 

 

Francis Uzoho, Daniel Akpeyi, Ikechukwu Ezenwa and John Noble are the other keepers to contest for the three gloves ahead of the AFCON.
