The National Assembly has asked President Bola Tinubu to present the 2025 budget as it resumes today from its annual recess.

The Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, said on Monday that the National Assembly was expecting the 2025 budget as well as the new Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper.

2. Dangote Calls on Nigerian Govt to End Petrol Subsidy

The President and Chief Executive of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has called on the Nigerian government to end petrol subsidy completely.

3. NNPC Admits to $6.8bn Debt, Sparks Integrity Concerns

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) recently admitted to owing petrol suppliers which has left the masses in shock.

Nigeria’s state-owned oil company admitted to owing $6.8bn. The masses are not shocked that the company was in debt rather they found it surprising that after months of denial, the company came out to admit the claim.

4. Naira Depreciates to N1,562.66/$ At Official Market 

Nigerian naira opened the week on a negative note, as it recorded losses at the official segment of the foreign exchange market on Monday, 23 September 2024.

The local currency exchanged N1,562.66 against the dollar on Monday, according to the Nigeria Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM) data published on the FMDQ Securities and Exchange platform. Read more

5. World’s Oceans Close to Becoming too Acidic – Report

A new report has said that the world’s oceans are close to becoming too acidic to properly sustain marine life or help stabilise the climate.

The report by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) detailed nine factors that are crucial for regulating the planet’s ability to sustain life. However, in six of these areas, the safe limit has already been exceeded in recent years as a result of human activity.

6. Mysterious 18th Century Diamond Necklace set for sale in November

A mysterious 18th century necklace made from around 500 diamonds, is set for auction sale in November, as said by Sotheby’s on Monday.

The necklace, which is composed of three rows of diamonds finished with a diamond tassel at each end, some of which are believed to have been taken from a piece that contributed to Marie Antoinette’s demise, will make its first public appearance in 50 years on Monday, and is expected to fetch between $1.8 and $2.8 million.

7. Edo Election: PDP Vows to  Retrieve Mandate in Court

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vowed to go to court to retrieve what it called its “stolen mandate,” in Edo State. This comes after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), declared Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as winner of Edo State governorship election.

The PDP acting National Chairman, Amb. Umar Damagum, announced this at a briefing in Abuja charging the people of Edo State to “remain resolute and undeterred as our party takes sure and firm steps to retrieve the mandate with every means legal and available in a democracy.”

8. Diesel Price Still Increasing Nationwide — NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), has said that the average retail price of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), otherwise known as Diesel, increased Year-on-Year (YoY), by 64.58 percent from N854.32 per liter recorded in August 2023 to N1,406.05 per liter in August 2024.

On a Month-on-Month (MoM), basis, the average price value increased from N1,379.48 per liter in July 2024 indicating a 1.93 percent increase.

9. Amotekun Arrests 27 Kidnap Suspects

Western Nigeria Security Network in Ondo State, code named Amotekun Corps, has arrested 27 alleged suspects over kidnapping, killing and other crimes.

This was disclosed by the state Commander of the Amotekun Corps, Mr Adetunji Adeleye, while parading the suspects before reporters on Monday in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

10. Army Troops Intensify Operations Against Crime in Lagos, Ogun

The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army has intensified their operations in order to enhance security and curb criminalities in Lagos and Ogun States.

The troops have carried out successful operations in the past week that has led to the multiple arrest of kidnappers, thieves and vandals.

11. Notorious Bandit Commander Killed in Gang Clash

Notorious bandit commander, Kachalla Tukur Sharme, who is linked to the kidnap of 121 pupils of Bethel Baptist High School in Kaduna State has been killed in a violent clash between their group and a rival gang in the forests around Rijana and Kaso, Kaduna State.

According to a statement by the Overseeing Commissioner, Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs of the state, Samuel Aruwan, he said that the clash which occurred over the weekend, left several bandits critically injured, while some kidnapped victims managed to escape during the chaos.

12. NSITF to Partner with FOCI, Seeks Cover for Casual Construction Workers

The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has called for partnership with the Federation of Construction Industry (FOCI) in order to have an insurance cover for casual workers in the sector through the Employees Compensation Scheme (ECS).

This was disclosed by the fund’s Managing Director Oluwaseun Faleye, at FOCI’s 68 annual general meeting (AGM) yesterday in Abuja.

President Bola Tinubu has said that the current hardship being faced Nigerians is for a short term but the benefits coming is for a long term.

President Tinubu said this at this year’s annual national conference of the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) on Monday, in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

A tanker carrying fuel exploded in Maitama, Abuja on Monday night, leaving many injured.

The cause of the incident is yet to be found out as it is still under investigation.

15. FCT Police Detain Suspect Accused Of Taking Woman To Hotel For Ritual

The FCT Police Command has confirmed that it has taken into custody one Joseph Efe (30) accused of taking a woman to an Abuja hotel with the aim of using her for ritual.

This was revealed in a statement by the command’s spokeswoman, SP Josephine Adeh.

16. Nigeria Currently Witnessing Continuous transmission of Polio Virus – NPHCDA

National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has said that the country is currently witnessing continuous transmission of the circulating variant poliovirus type 2(cVPV2).

This was disclosed by the executive director of the agency, Dr Muyi Aina during the engagement meeting with religious leaders, organised by the agency in collaboration with the Sultan Foundation for Peace and Development on Monday in Abuja.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has warned against the unauthorised use of its accoutrements for skit making.

The EFCC said this in concern to an old video named “EFCC and Army Wahala” which is now gaining traction on social media.

19. FEC Approves 14 road Constructions in Flood Affected States

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the construction of 14 roads and bridges in states which were badly affected by the flood.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi said this while addressing State House correspondents after the FEC meeting.

20. 79th UNGA: US Commits $320m in Mortgage, SMEs in Nigeria

The United States Chamber of Commerce on Monday, made a commitment of about $320 million to mortgage financing, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, SMEs, in Nigeria.

The commitment was one of the successes of Nigeria’s participation at the 79th Session of the ongoing United Nations General Assembly, UNGA.
