Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, says the agreement signed with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will strengthen the capacity of legislators for effective legislation and deliver on their promises in critical areas of concern to the people.
Prime Business Africa reports that on Thursday, 5 September, the speaker signed an agreement with UNDP for the implementation of the Parliamentary Development Programme agreed on earlier this year.

In a post on his X handle, Abbas described the agreement as “historic”, adding that it is perhaps, “the most important collaboration between the House and the UNDP since the inception of parliamentary democracy in Nigeria.”
He said the programme will help to enhance the capacity of legislators, staff, and clerks through comprehensive training over the next three years.
The speaker thanked the UNDP Resident Representative in Nigeria, Elsie Attafuah and her team for their commitment to the initiative, and expressed belief that the programme will strengthen their capacity to serve the people well through quality legislation.
“This agreement is probably the most important collaboration between the House and the UNDP since the inception of parliamentary democracy in Nigeria,” Abbas stated.
“It underscores the importance of our collaboration, as we work together to enhance the capacity of the legislature, staff, and clerks through comprehensive training over the next three years.
“The UNDP’s commitment to this initiative is evident in their agreement to establish a dedicated office and employ staff, highlighting the depth of our partnership and its potential to strengthen Nigeria’s parliamentary democracy.

“I believe at the end of the day, the Nigerian legislature will move from strength to strength. Our capacity to deliver on the promises to our people, on all key areas of concern, would be strengthened in due course.
“I thank the UNDP through its Resident Representative in Nigeria, Elsie Attafuah, and her team for their commitment to the implementation of this noble partnership.”
Elsie Attafuah, who led a delegation from UNDP, signed on behalf of her organisation.
In her remarks via a post on X, Attafuah said the agreement for the implementation of the Parliamentary Development Programme is a landmark partnership, adding that it this is a moment of history between UNDP and Nigeria.
She applauded the Speaker and the entire House of Representatives for the partnership with UNDP, and reiterated UN body’s commitment to the development of Nigeria.
