In a significant development that would further shape the ongoing Gaza conflict, Hamas has announced the alleged leader of the 7th October attack in Israel, Yahya Sinwar, as its new political leader.

This appointment follows the death of former political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed by airstrike at his residence in Tehran. Haniyeh was in the Iranian capital to attend the inauguration of Iran’s new President, Masoud Pezeshkian.

“The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas announces the selection of Commander Yahya Sinwar as the head of the political bureau of the movement, succeeding the martyr Commander Ismail Haniyeh, may Allah have mercy on him,” the group stated.

Sinwar, 61, a prominent figure in Hamas, is widely recognised for his role in orchestrating the brutal attack on Southern Israel on 7th October 2023. That attack resulted in the deaths of over 1,000 Israelis and the capture of 250 hostages. The incident significantly escalated the ongoing conflict, leading to a severe Israeli military response aimed at eliminating Hamas leaders and severely impacting Gaza. The ensuing violence has claimed more than 37,000 Palestinian lives, with many others displaced and facing dire humanitarian conditions.

Israeli military spokesman, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, responded to Sinwar’s appointment by stating, “There is only one place for Yahya Sinwar, and it is beside Mohammed Deif and the rest of the October 7th terrorists. That is the only place we are preparing and intending for him.”

Sinwar, who was born in the Khan Younis refugee camp in southern Gaza, previously served as Hamas’ leader in Gaza starting in 2017. Known for his hardline stance against Israel and his ruthless approach, Sinwar has been a central figure in the group’s military and political strategy. His appointment and the killing of former leader, Ismail Haniyeh will impact greatly the ongoing talks for a cease-fire in the region, being brokered by Egypt and other nations in the region in Qatar.
