After losing out in the semifinals against Colombia in a tense and fracas dented encounter, Uruguay will face Canada today for the third place match at the Bank of America of the CONMEBOL Copa America 2024.

Uruguay faced a tumultuous night during their Copa America semifinal clash against Colombia. Marcelo Bielsa’s squad suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat before it all descended into chaos with star player Darwin Nunez embroiled in a physical altercation with Colombian fans.

Fifteen time winners Uruguay are were seeking their 16th title just like Argentina who will face Colombia in tomorrow’s final in the hope of clinching their 16th title.

But for today’s third place match, the two nations will meet for the third time in their history. Uruguay won the first meeting 3-1 on February 2, 1986 in the Miami Cup with goals from Carlos Aguilera, Santiago Ostolaza, and Jose Luis Zalazar.

Uruguay won 2-0 with goals from Nicolas de la Cruz and Darwin Nuñez on September 27, 2022 at the Tehelme Pole Stadium in Bratislava, Slovakia. Fourteen players who participated for either team in that friendly are among the current rosters for the 2024 Copa America.

Debutants Canada hope to mark their appearance with a top three finish by beating Uruguay. Mexico and Honduras are the only Concacaf teams to have achieved this feat in the 1993 and 2001 editions, respectively.

Can Canada Pull An Upset?

Uruguay will play the third-place match in the Copa América for the fourth time, having won one and lost two. In 2001, they lost on penalties against Honduras; in 2004, they defeated Peru; and in 2007, they lost to Mexico.

But against debutants Canada today, the odds certainly favour Uruguay with all the experiences in the kitty. Should Canada emerge winners, it will not only be an upset but a big reward for their effort.
