Minimum Wage: Tinubu Meets With Labour Leaders

President Bola Tinubu is currently meeting with the leadership of organised labour behind closed-door at the State House, Abuja regarding the controversial new minimum wage.

President Tinubu is meeting with the Presidents of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Trade Union Congress (TUC), Joe Ajaero, and Festus Osifo respectively. In the meeting that started at 2 pm, Tinubu and the labour leaders are expected to reach an amicable resolution of the differences between the Federal Government’s position and labour’s demand.

The Tripartite Committee on the new national minimum wage had recently submitted two figures to the President. While the government’s representative offered to pay N62,000, organised labour has insisted on N250,000 as a national minimum wage.

Due to the disagreement over the figure, the President decided to consult with all the relevant stakeholders to resolve all the contentious issues before sending any figure to the National Assembly through the Executive Bill.

Prime Business Africa gathered that apart from the representatives of organised labour, those from the government side also attending the meeting include Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume; the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun; Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris; Minister of Health, and coordinating Minister of Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate; Minister of Education, Prof Mamman Tahir; and Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha.
