The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the results of the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), with over 1.4 million candidates failing to meet the minimum score of 200 required for admission into tertiary institutions.
According to the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, out of the 1,842,464 candidates whose results were released, 1,402,490 scored below 200, representing 78% of the total. Only 8,401 candidates scored 300 and above, while 77,070 scored 250 and above.
Prof. Oloyede noted that the board does not publish the names of its best-performing candidates, as the UTME is only a ranking examination and admission to tertiary institutions depends on various parameters. He also emphasized that the board withholds results of 64,624 candidates pending investigation.
Despite the release of results, the board is still conducting examinations in nine foreign centers, including Abidjan, Ivory Coast; Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; and London, United Kingdom, to promote Nigerian institutions and reflect global academic standards.
The JAMB results have sparked concerns about the quality of education and the preparedness of candidates for tertiary education. Stakeholders are calling for improved educational standards and better preparation for students to succeed in the competitive admission process.
In the words of Prof. Oloyede, “The board is today releasing the results of 1,842,464 candidates. 64,624 results are under investigation for verification, procedural investigation of candidates, Centre-based investigation, and alleged examination misconduct.”
