Arsenal’s Premier League title challenge was kept alive Sunday evening as the impeccable Gunners beat league leaders Liverpool 3-1 at The Emirates to close the gap at the top of the table to just two points, reports Prime Business Africa.

The win represents Arsenal’s highest scoreline over the Merseysiders since the 2-0 win in August 2015.

Arsenal required to win if they must remain within striking distance and they went ahead through England international Bukayo Saka who pounced on a rebound after Martin Odegaard’s shot was blocked.

Gabriel Magalhaes’ own goal after a lack of communication between William Saliba, David Raya and the Brazilian, as caused by Luis Diaz just before the break, reinvigorated the Reds.

In the second half, Liverpool, playing with 10 men following the second yellow card and subsequent red card of Ibrahim Konate, suffered their own defensive lapse as Virgil van Dijk and Allison got in the way of each other from a Gabriel Magalhaes’ long punt.

Gabriel Martinelli was on hand to profit from Allison’s clanger and place the ball inside the empty net.

Second half substitute Leandro Trossard brilliantly went past his markers and found the net with a deflection taking the ball through the legs of Allison.

The third goal deflated the away side and the result in itself flattered them with Mikel Arteta’s team having come close to scoring on a few other occasions.

Arsenal are on 49 points but Manchester City, with a better goal difference may usurp the north Londoners Monday night when they visit the Gtech Community stadium if they get a win.
