2023 AFCON: Boniface Undergoes Successful Surgery

Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface on Wednesday had a successful operation after copping a muscle tendon injury that has ruled him out of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.

The German Bundesliga club of the player, Bayer Leverkusen announced the successful surgery on their X account (formerly Twitter) as he is expected to begin rehabilitation in the coming days.

The prognosis had revealed that he will miss three months of football, a total of 18 matches for club and country and is expected to be back in April.

Boniface is the leading goal scorer for the Bundesliga leaders with 10 goals in 16 matches.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have called OGC Nice striker Terem Moffi to replace Boniface.

The OGC Nice striker, Moffi, who was in Nigeria’s provisional squad list is expected to join his international teammates in Abidjan on Sunday after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) approved the replacement of Boniface.

CAF’s rule stipulates that an injured player in an original squad can be replaced 24 hours before their first game of the tournament.
