Recounting how he got ensnared in the scam, Lou admitted, “I can’t believe this is happening. I saw an article guide to the airdrop and followed the link to sign a message. I didn’t even question it… It looked like such a simple message. It’s always someone else’s problem.”

Upon investigation, Lou discovered that the hacker not only swindled 66 ETH, including his 52, but also pilfered an additional 14 ETH (~$31k) from other victims.

Collaborating with @HackersResidue, Lou uncovered intriguing evidence, suggesting the operation was more elaborate than initially thought.

This unfortunate incident mirrors a broader trend in the crypto space. A report by Immunefi unveiled that in 2022, crypto investors globally lost $3.9 billion to hackers and fraudsters, a decrease from the $8.08 billion lost in 2021.

Despite this decline, scams persist, with specific projects like Ronin Network, BNB Chain, Wormhole, and FTX being notable victims of fraud.

Lou’s experience serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges in safeguarding crypto assets and the imperative need for heightened vigilance in the ever-evolving landscape of digital finance.
